Keyword Planner is a free AdWords tool for new or experienced advertisers. No matter what business category your are in, the Google keyword planner tool is very useful.
In this post I’ll share how to find good and high competition keywords that you can use for your SEO campaigns.
How to Start:
Visit http://adwords.google.com/KeywordPlanner to sign up or sign in to Google AdWords with your Gmail username and password.
Once you log into your AdWords account you can skip setting up a campaign, click on the tools button at the top. Then, click Keyword Planner.
The tool will show you three options.
- Search for new keywords using a phrase, website or category: This section generates lists of keywords for a new campaign. There are some more option to enter like your landing page URL, product category, targeted location, language and etc. The generated list will includes search volume and trend data.
- Get search volume data and trends: This section allows you to upload list of keywords to get volume and trend data directly.
- Multiply keyword lists to get new keywords: This section allows you to create large lists of keywords by generating all possible combinations of terms.
- Get click and cost performance forecasts: This section is one of the most favorite tool for advertisers. This section lets you upload a list of keywords and get the details about clicks and impressions based on a specific budget and targeting criteria.
For the keyword research click on the first option where it says Search for new keywords using a phrase, website or category. You have a number of options, where you enter keywords related to your product or service.
Now, for example let’s put a keyword like “mumbai hotels” and click on get idea button. This will land you on the actual keyword planner page. By default, it will bring you to Ad group ideas. So, click on Keywords ideas. You will see the lists of keywords.
Click on Add to plan and set match to Exact match since by default, Google sets the keywords to broad match. Finally, download the keyword plan.
Select segment by month to get the monthly searches over the last 12 months.
If you are targeting a keyword and putting it into SEO than make sure the trend is going in the right direction which is up. Keyword which are the low search volume might not be good for page. Obviously, there are always some fluctuations, but over a year you can usually tell the direction that a keyword tends to go.
Next is competition, this is competition for people advertising within AdWords. If the competition is high that mean this keyword is going to be to convert and to monetize. So, I mostly use keywords planner tool to in my SEO keyword strategy.
